Huawei CANN
Ascend's CUDA-alternative software stack — China's key software-moat gap
CANN (Compute Architecture for Neural Networks) is Huawei's heterogeneous compute software stack for Ascend, the Chinese answer to Nvidia's CUDA. Its relative immaturity versus CUDA is the single biggest bottleneck to Ascend adoption; Huawei open-sourced parts of CANN in 2025 to accelerate ecosystem buy-in and reduce the software-moat gap.
