Housed at NIST, the body launched as the US AI Safety Institute (rebranded toward CAISI, the Center for AI Standards and Innovation, under the 2025 administration) conducts model evaluations, red-teaming, and standards work with agreements from OpenAI, Anthropic, and others. It is the US node of a network of national safety institutes. Its posture shifted from safety framing toward standards/security and competitiveness.
