SoftBank Group
Masayoshi Son's AI mega-bet: Arm owner, OpenAI backer, Stargate co-lead
SoftBank owns ~90% of Arm and became a lead financier of the AI buildout in 2025, anchoring the $500B Stargate datacenter program with OpenAI and Oracle and committing tens of billions directly to OpenAI (leading a round that valued OpenAI at ~$500B). It also acquired chip/design assets (Ampere Computing, Graphcore earlier) and reportedly explored large equity in OpenAI plus an Nvidia stake. SoftBank's strategy is a leveraged, concentrated wager that AGI-scale compute demand will compound Arm's and its portfolio's value.
