Tsinghua-spun lab behind the GLM family, first Chinese lab on US Entity List
Zhipu AI (Z.ai), spun out of Tsinghua, ships the GLM series including GLM-4.5/4.6 open-weight models competitive with frontier Western models on agentic and coding tasks. Added to the US Entity List in January 2025, it became a symbol of state-backed Chinese AI. It filed for a Hong Kong/STAR Market IPO in 2025 and is heavily funded by local governments and Chinese sovereign capital.
