Japan (METI / Rapidus)
State-backed 2nm champion Rapidus + subsidies to TSMC Kumamoto
Japan's METI is subsidizing a domestic leading-edge comeback: ~$8B+ in state support for Rapidus (targeting 2nm production ~2027 with IBM and imec tech) and multi-billion subsidies drawing TSMC's Kumamoto (JASM) fabs and Micron/Kioxia memory. Japan also participates in the US-led export-control coalition restricting SME to China. It is a rising second-tier sovereign node aiming to re-enter the leading edge and secure supply-chain resilience.
