Google paid Apple a whopping $20 billion in 2022 to be the default search engine in the Safari web browser. This information was revealed in newly unsealed court documents in the Justice Department's antitrust case against Google.

The case alleges that Google has illegally dominated the online search market and its related advertising. It is interesting to note that these payments from Google made up more than 17% of Apple's 2020 operating income. A decision on the case is expected later this year.

In other news, Google is advocating for a change in immigration policy to attract more AI talent to the US, according to The Verge. However, the tech giant has recently laid off 200 workers in its "Core" division, moving some jobs to India and Mexico.

On the other hand, Apple's second-quarter earnings report is expected to be impacted by slower iPhone sales. It will be interesting to see how the company fares, given that the Google payment was a significant portion of its operating income.
