Stripe Agrees to Buy AI Model Router OpenRouter?

My View: What Stripe is actually buying, in my read:

Stripe is reportedly buying OpenRouter for more than $7B.
Three months ago it raised at $1.3B.

1. The meter, not the router.
OpenRouter already counts every token for 10M+ developers across 500+ models. Stripe's entire business is sitting in the middle of a transaction and metering it. Same position, new rail.

2. The only neutral view in AI.
OpenAI sees OpenAI. OpenRouter sees who switches from whom, at what price, the moment quality slips. That vantage point cannot be rebuilt later.

3. The missing half of agent payments. [ IMP ]
Stripe spent a year shipping rails so AI agents can buy things. The thing agents buy most is inference itself.

4. The tell is the price tag next door.
Stripe also has a $53B bid in for PayPal. Two bets on two different futures of payments. This one costs 13% of the other.

The caveat most posts are skipping: neither company has confirmed. Both declined to comment, and Stripe's newsroom is silent. Bloomberg reported it.

Reported, not official.
