Automated Planning
Automated planning finds a sequence of actions that takes a system from where it is to a goal, given rules about what each action does. It is how robots, logistics systems and spacecraft have long decided what to do, with guarantees that language models lack. Modern agents plan by generating text, and combining the two approaches is an active area of work.
