Technological Singularity

The technological singularity is a hypothesis, not a forecast: a machine able to improve its own design triggers a feedback loop, each generation building a smarter successor until progress outruns human comprehension. Von Neumann used the word in the 1950s, I.J. Good called it an intelligence explosion in 1965, Vernor Vinge named it in 1993, Ray Kurzweil dated it to 2045. The common error is treating it as a schedule. Whether self-improvement compounds or hits diminishing returns from data, compute and physical experiment is contested.
