⚖️Narrow AI vs Strong AI

Narrow or weak AI covers every system shipping today: models trained for a bounded task set, from spam filters to frontier chatbots. Strong AI is the contrast, and the term carries two meanings. Searle coined it in 1980 for the claim that a running program literally understands, a claim about mind, not capability. Vendors now use it as a synonym for artificial general intelligence, a claim about breadth of competence. On Searle's framing, a system could match humans on every task and still understand nothing.
