US AI Policy and Executive Orders

US AI policy is set mainly by executive orders, agency frameworks and state laws, not one federal AI statute. Executive Order 14110 (October 2023) set reporting duties for developers of the most powerful models; it was revoked in January 2025, and EO 14179 ordered an AI Action Plan, published July 2025. States move first: California's SB 53 (September 2025) requires frontier developers to publish safety frameworks and report critical incidents.
